first was held on October 25, 2005, at the time, were conducted over 400 events in more than 8,000 venues in 31 provinces of the 17 autonomous communities (Spain). More than 200 public and private entities signed the Declaration of Principles for building Information Society, representing more than one million citizens. Shortly after the Summit of the Information Society in Tunis in November 2005 decided to propose to the UN the designation of 17 May as World Day of Information Society, so moved to the so-called Internet Day on that date.
Goal
The aim of this day is to show possibilities offered by new technologies improve the standard of living of peoples and citizens .
initiative in Latin America World Internet Day was also well received, so that today are linked by the Colombian Association of Users of Internet, the Mexican Internet Association, the Association of Internet Users Argentina and in Ecuador ISOC chapter in that country.
In Colombia, the Colombian Association of Internet Users institutional mission is to promote socialization, knowledge, use and exploitation of Information and Communications Technology and particularly the Internet in the country.
Article 121 of the document of conclusions of the World Summit on the Information Society, held in Tunis in November 2005, states that:
must contribute to the awareness of the Internet to become a truly global resource accessible to the public . We call upon the UNGA to declare 17 May the World Day of the Information Society to be held annually and will serve to raise awareness about the importance of this global action on issues addressed in the Summit, particular, the potential role of ICT use to societies and economies, and different ways to bridge the digital divide.
Internet Day provides an opportunity to encourage and facilitate access to Information Society the unconnected and the disabled. In addition, building on experience gained in Spain, it will encourage Internet Day in other countries, making available to those interested all the work, information and methodology for those who have participated in previous editions.
